Five traditional principles that promote health, happiness and longevity and possibly also the success in life are Satvikta i.e. a balanced diet without addiction, Shramta i.e. physical activity or exercise, Samparkta i.e. social interaction, Sakriyata i.e. regular engagement in work or some task and Shaithalyata i.e. stress busting through mental relaxation.
A sixth dimension i.e. being emotionally intelligent also serves to promote life but its importance is not so well recognized. Human emotions are varied and numerous that add to the complexities of our personality and attitudes and therefore influence our life. To talk about emotional intelligence from practical life’s perspective will be more meaningful than to discuss the subject from purely scientific angle. It is difficult to define emotional intelligence but in simple terms, people who express their emotions with comfort and in such a way that they are able to effectively deal with themselves, with others and with the environment are regarded as emotionally intelligent. In other words, people with positive emotions like love, respect, humility, compassion, tolerance and endurance etc. are emotionally intelligent and do well in life while those with negative emotions like hate, ego, vanity, intimidation, anger and fear etc. are emotionally stupid and are liable to failures. It is possible that people may be born with certain emotions but largely they would be acquiring their emotional personality as they go on with their lives. Moreover, everyone has the opportunity and ability to alter, control and practice their emotions to improve their life. And this ability can be strengthened by various methods since emotional intelligence is closely interwoven with social, spiritual and psychological intelligence.
Following are some of the elements that an emotionally intelligent person can possess.
1.Does not excessively perceive or over-reacts to emotions, both positive and negative.
2.Has adequate coping ability and is resilient.
3.Able to introspect oneself, analyze others and conduct accordingly with those around him.
4.Able to place himself in situations faced by others and then take decision. (Do unto others what you want others to do unto you).
5.Has a habit of recognizing the virtues of others and ignore their shortcomings.
6.Persues the goal with zest and optimism, yet not be despondent if goal is not met.
